For years, I bought a lot of the things we use around the house without giving them much thought.
Laundry detergent was laundry detergent. Dish soap was dish soap. Shampoo, cleaners, vitamins, toothpaste—you need them, you buy them.
Most of the time, I grabbed the brand I knew, whatever was on sale, or simply what I had always used.
Lately, though, I’ve been paying a little more attention.
Not because I suddenly decided everything in my house needed to change. And definitely not because I think there is one “perfect” way everyone should shop.
I’ve just started asking more questions about the things I’m already buying and already spending money on.
When Did Everyday Stuff Get So Expensive? 💰
I know I’m not the only person who has walked out of a store lately wondering:
“What in the world did I just spend all that money on?” 😂
It seems like everything costs more.
And when you start looking at how much you spend over an entire year on things like laundry products, cleaning supplies, personal care products and other household basics, it can really add up.
That got me thinking.
If I’m going to spend the money anyway, maybe I should pay more attention to what I’m getting for that money.
I Started Asking Different Questions
Instead of automatically reaching for the same thing, I’ve started asking myself:
Do I actually like this product?
How long does it last?
What ingredients are in it?
Am I paying for the product—or mostly paying for the name?
Is there another option I might like better?
And probably the biggest question:
Am I buying this because I’ve actually chosen it, or just because I’ve always bought it?
That last one surprised me.
There were quite a few things in my house that I couldn’t give you a particularly good reason for buying other than, “Well...that’s what I’ve always used.” 😂

Small Changes—Not an Overnight Makeover
One thing I don’t want HomeGoods4Hope to ever become is a place that makes people feel like they’re doing everything wrong.
I’m certainly not throwing everything in my house away and starting over! 😂
I’m learning as I go.
When something runs out, I might look at some other choices before replacing it. If I find something I like better, great. If I don’t, that’s okay too.
Sometimes I find something I really like.
Sometimes I decide the thing I’ve been using all along works perfectly fine.
And sometimes I try something and think, “Nope. Not buying THAT again.” 😂
That’s real life.
Better Doesn’t Have to Mean More Expensive
I think this was one of my biggest misconceptions.
For a long time, I assumed that paying more attention to ingredients or looking for different household and wellness products automatically meant spending more money.
That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case.
I’ve started looking at more than just the price printed on the package.
How concentrated is it?
How much do I actually use each time?
How long will it last?
Is it replacing something else I’m already buying?
And most importantly—does it actually work?
Because something isn’t a bargain if I don’t like it or it doesn’t do the job.
Why I’m Sharing What I Learn
This is really where HomeGoods4Hope comes in.
I’m not an expert, and I’m not going to pretend I know everything about every ingredient, every product, or every way to save money.
I don’t.
I’m simply becoming more intentional about some of the choices I make for my home, health and wellness—and sharing what I learn along the way.
If I find something that saves me money, I’ll share it.
If I find something I really like, I’ll share that too.
And if I discover something that sounded wonderful but didn’t impress me?
Well...I think that’s worth sharing too. 😂
Because I’d much rather HomeGoods4Hope be a place for real experiences and real conversations than a place where everything sounds like an advertisement.
One Better Choice at a Time 💚
I’ve realized that changing the way we shop doesn’t have to mean completely changing our lives.
Sometimes it’s simply making one better choice at a time.
Maybe that’s finding a household product you like better.
Maybe it’s discovering something that lasts longer and saves you a little money.
Maybe it’s looking at an ingredient label for the first time.
Or maybe it’s deciding the product you’ve been using for 20 years is still the best choice for you.
That’s okay too.
The important part, at least for me, is becoming a little more intentional about where my money goes and what I’m bringing into my home.
I’m still learning.
I’m still trying things.
And I’m sure I’ll make a few questionable purchases along the way. 😂
But I’m enjoying the journey—and I’ll keep sharing what I discover.
Now I’d Love to Hear From You ❤️
I’ve shared some of the little changes I’ve been making, but now I’m curious about you.
What’s one everyday product you changed and would NEVER go back to your old one?
It can be anything—laundry detergent, dish soap, shampoo, toothpaste, cleaning products, coffee...whatever! 😂
I love hearing what other people have discovered because sometimes the best recommendations don’t come from commercials—they come from people who have actually tried something and loved it.
So if you have one, share it with me! You might just give me—or someone else—something new to try. 😊
There’s a Bigger Reason Behind HomeGoods4Hope 💙
HomeGoods4Hope actually grew out of something much more personal than household products and saving money.
My brother Rick was diagnosed with Stage IV rectal cancer just one day after his 58th birthday, and I’m his caregiver. That diagnosis changed a lot for both of us—and it’s a big part of the reason HomeGoods4Hope exists.
What started as a way to share things I was learning about saving money, home, health and wellness also became a way for me to help support Rick during his cancer journey.
So when you visit HomeGoods4Hope, there’s a real family and a real story behind it. ❤️
If you’re new here and would like to know more about Rick, me, and why I created HomeGoods4Hope, I’d love for you to read our story.
